Regulating Council of the 'Bullas' Origin Denomination

Vine is, together with fruit trees and cereal, one of the main cultivations in this area of the Region of Murcia and it is one of the most important incomes for the peasants (natural conditions of this area not allow the existence of other alternative cultivations). Then, one of the main objectives of the Regulating Council of the 'Bullas' Origin Denomination is the quality of the produced wines.

The total cultivation surface is about 5,500 hectares, 80% devoted to the Monastrell red grape variety, well adapted to the conditions of the area. Other varieties are Tempranillo (red wines) and Macabeo and Airen (white). The Regulating Council authorized in 1998 the introduction of new varieties as the registered wineries had demanded, seeking to improve the quality of the area's wines but respecting always their identity (the Monastrell variety continued being the main one). The new varieties are red: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Garnacha.

The wines covered by the 'Bullas' Origin Denomination and their typologies, depending on the alcoholic volume, are:

  • Red wines, with a minimum alcoholic volume of 12%. They must have a minimum of 60% of Monastrell variety and the remaining part whatever of the other allowed red varieties (Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha and Petit Verdot).
  • Rosé wines, with a minimum alcoholic volume of 11%. They must have a minimum of 60% of Monastrell variety and the remaining part whatever of the other allowed red varieties (Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha and Petit Verdot).
  • White wines, White wines, with a minimum alcoholic volume of 11%, elaborated with Macabeo, Airén, Moscatel de Alejandría, Moscatel of small grane and Sauvignon Blanc.

The wine growers census has 800 members from about 2,500 hectares provisionally registered. The registered wineries are 12: Cooperativa Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Cooperativa San Isidro, Bodega Balcona S.L., Bodegas Carrascalejo, Bodegas Madroñal, Bodega Mercader Quesada, Bodega Monastrell, Molino y Lagares de Bullas, S.L., Bodega Los Ceperos (they all are situated in Bullas and its surrounding area). Two more are located in Cehegín: A. García Noguerol and Carreño Peñalver; and one more in Moratalla: Bodega Finca de Ulea. Total production per year (in normal climate conditions) is around 10 million litres

The Rules of the 'Bullas' Denomination Origin and its Regulating Council were approved by the Regional Department of Agriculture on March 29 th 1994 (BORM, 23/4/1994), and ratified by the Ministry of Agriculture on September 5 th 1994 (BOE 17/9/1994) .

The new Rules adapted to the Wine Law (24/2003) were approved on June 12th, 2006:
