La Copa

La Copa is the only village belonging to the municipality of Bullas . It has a population of 900 inhabitants and is located on a plain adjacent to the Campo de Cagitán area, 4 km away from the town of Bullas, 545 metres above sea level.

The remains of ancient Roman 'villae' in the outskirts of the village are the oldest traces of the human presence in this territory. The history of La Copa is linked to that of Bullas, as they share a common origin probably since the beginning of the 17 th century and especially from 1690 when the inhabitants of the village decided to join the new municipality of Bullas after the secession from Cehegín. By that time there were two 'Copas' (La Copa de Arriba or Upper Copa which was a small group of country houses near the mount of La Silla) and La Copa de Abajo or Lower Copa, which is properly today's La Copa.

La Copa

Agriculture and livestock have been the main economic and employing activities for the inhabitants of La Copa until the middle of the 20th century. At the beginning of the 60's a local family established a vegetables canned food factory which was a real revolution for the economic life of the village.

La Copa de Bullas is a village that has preserved its identity and a good proof of that is the fact of the celebration of some feasts and traditions such as Saint Anton in January, the Inmaculate Conception in December and the Patronal one at the beginning of September.

The main points of interest in La Copa are the church of Our Lady of Consolation, as older as the village, which was declared an independent parish in 1904, and the recently rebuilt Calvario's hermitage, located in the quarter of the same name and where the image of Saint Anton is worshipped.
